Half of the students in our sample used some type of organisation and planning aids to help them succeed in their PhD studies before learning about the Grid. The other half did not have a system for keeping productive and managing their time.
What students really want is to achieve results without stress and unnecessary trade-offs.
What gets in the way of PhD success?
- Waning motivation, self-doubt, feeling lost.
- Lack of clarity and/or clear purpose.
- Life responsibilities such as having a family, kids, partner.
- Not making the necessary progress and/or finding the PhD journey very challenging.
How does this impact the student?
- Withdraw from other activities they also enjoyed which drives greater imbalance.
- Experience more stress, worry and anxiety.
- Feel tired and not wanting to engage with others.
- Lose concentration, focus or drive which then adds more pressure.
- Feel demoralized and beaten.
The overall picture we obtained shows that PhD success currently come at a cost, or not at all.
The initial data we collected paints a picture where thriving is missing. While this is a small pilot study, it would be exciting to flip this picture around and create conditions where PhD students naturally thrive and think of their PhD experience as one of the best things ever! It is something I want to work towards in partnership with more departmental and institutional heads to help more students achieve PhD success.
